We had the pleasure of eating at Café 222 in San Diego a few weeks
ago. The café is a quirky little restaurant with a great location in downtown San
Diego. It is located on the corner of Island Avenue and 2nd
Avenue. It has a nice little outdoor eating area, as well as a comfortable area
inside. The décor is fun and fresh, and the eating area is open and
We waited for about an hour on a Sunday morning to be
seated. It was pretty windy with a chance of rain, and at first they seated us in one of
their outside areas. We didn’t complain, but they found an inside area for us very quickly when they
noticed how cool it was, and that we had little kids. There were nine of us, so that
was no small feat for such a small restaurant! The staff was classy and sweet and
made us feel right at home.
The menu at Café 222 is interesting and delicious! They only serve breakfast
and lunch, but the majority of the items on the menu are breakfast items. We
usually try and eat a plant based diet 90% of the time, but this was not a time to stick to our
guns! I ordered the pumpkin waffle. My cousin recommended it and it
says on the menu that it was featured in Gourmet magazine. It was fabulous! George
had the All American, which was a huge meal and also delicious. The small kids both had the
kid pancake (which was only $2.75!) and they were in heaven because it was shaped like Mickey Mouse.
The rest of our party got a variety of pumpkin waffles, scrambles, and mixed breakfasts!
Everyone ate it all and loved it!
One of the items that catches your eye is a chandelier made out of
cups and saucers. The owner made it herself and now sells them through a local
company. It is the signature item in their décor, just as the pumpkin waffle in the
signature item on the menu!
We even got to speak with the owner, Terryl Gavre. She was
so nice and willing to chat about the restaurant. She actually is a chef there and it is
clear that she is the driving force behind the success of Café 222!
We would definitely go to Café 222 again. The atmosphere was great, the prices were very reasonable, and the food was
fantastic! Check it out if you are in the area!
